The African Center for Justice and Peace Studies (ACJPS) condemns the continued targeting of civilians by the conflicting parties in Sudan. In this release, ACJPS documents an incident where, according to eyewitnesses and medical sources, at least 80 people were killed, over 100 were injured, and four are missing following a drone strike on Kateela town, located about 186 kilometers southwest of Nyala city, the capital of South Darfur State. This attack is believed to have been carried out by the Sudanese Armed Forces. The number of casualties is believed to be higher; however, due to poor communication, the accurate number cannot be ascertained, and not all victims have been accounted for.

Eyewitnesses informed the ACJPS field researcher that they observed a drone in the sky over the town at around 4:00 PM on Monday, December 8th, 2025. They reported that the drone launched approximately six missiles targeting the Al-Salam neighborhood, the Kateela market, and in front of Al-Sohainy Square, which is situated in the city center.

The witnesses reported that a celebration was underway at Al-Sohainy Square to honor a visit by a delegation from the civilian administration affiliated with the Rapid Support Forces Tasis Government of Nyala. The event was interrupted when a drone launched from the east of the town and targeted the gathering.

Medical sources reported several deaths and injuries, mostly among civilians, who were taken to the rural hospital in Tulus and health centers in Kateela. Others were transported to Nyala city.

Local sources reported that the Rapid Support Forces arrested a large number of citizens from the Kateela and Tulus localities over allegations of collaboration with the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), and they shut down satellite internet centers, particularly Starlink, following this incident.

ACJPS field monitors obtained some of the names of the victims who lost their lives, the injured, and the missing people.

Call to Action

We reiterate our calls to;

  • The warring parties to comply with their obligations under international humanitarian law to ensure the protection of civilians and refrain from attacking the vulnerable population.
  • The international community to impose targeted sanctions against individuals and entities responsible for international crimes.
  • The international community should support justice by backing the International Criminal Court, creating an independent judicial mechanism for Sudan, using universal jurisdiction to hold perpetrators accountable, and ensuring those who orchestrate atrocities face consequences.
  • States, especially those with influence over the parties involved, are urged to uphold arms embargoes, refrain from providing material support, and enhance humanitarian assistance.
