The armed conflict that erupted in Sudan on 15 April 2023 between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces exacerbated an education crisis recognized as the most severe in the world in modern history. Often described as invisible compared to other aspects of the war, this crisis has profoundly affected the education system and ranks among the most serious humanitarian disasters. Within months of the outbreak of fighting, an entire generation of children found themselves excluded from education and deprived of their right to learn.
This report reveals that the war not only halted the educational process but also led to its collapse across large areas of Sudan. With nearly nineteen million children out of the education system, more than ten thousand schools closed, and many children missing over five hundred school days, the report documents numerous direct violations against educational facilities, including the use of schools as military bases and shelters, as well as their targeting through bombing, destruction, and looting.
